  • When Birds Recycle February 3, 2012
I was out and about on Sunday, cleaning up after the dogs and looking for wildlife of interest. January is not always the best time of year to find things, but Florida has experienced a relatively warm winter and spring is in the air so we have our fair share of resident wildlife meandering around.... • Orange Moon and The Grandmother Tree February 1, 2012
Exploring the wonders of nature with the children who come to visit my wildlife garden is one of the greatest joys of my life. We turn over rocks to look for the Worm Snake who lives there. We watch the bugs with our hand lenses. We are amazed when the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis.... [Continue Reading] […]

  • Green Healthy Lawns and Yards without Chemicals January 31, 2012
In cased you missed it, last week our very own Carole Brown took the wildlife gardening world by storm with her exposure of the National Wildlife Federation/ScottsMiracle-Gro partnership, which quickly escalated into a widespread social media storm of protest by organic gardeners, farmers and environmental writers. On Sunday, amazingly, the NWF’s reversed th […]

  • Counting Birds in the Garden January 30, 2012
I could not have guessed how timely this post would turn out to be.  I thought, I’ll get a head start promoting the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).  After all we want to see more birds in the garden.  But who would have guessed that while I was gazing out my window this past gray... • Feels Like the First Time January 29, 2012
[Guest post by Jan Bills] “For me the only things of interests are those linked to the heart” ~Audrey Hepburn When I read the email from Carole asking if I would like to write a guest post for her highly regarded, well-respected website, I nearly dropped my teeth! Me, I thought to myself. I am... [Continue Reading] […]

About Me

Welcome to Get in the Garden, a blog devoted to a love of all things garden and home. For me gardening isn’t a state of mind, it’s a way of life. I love everything about it. The joy of watching seeds sprout, the challenge of nurturing seedlings into mature plants, and the blessing of every harvest. There’s peace inside the garden gate inspired by God’s creation and the changing seasons. There’s always something new and amazing to see.

This blog is dedicated to my family and friends who have encouraged me over and over to “try it and see what happens”. Thanks to my hubby who is my tech guru, and my brother who is my partner-in-growing even though we are two states apart. Thanks to all of my dear, sweet, wonderful friends who have brought people to see the gardens, and have lovingly teased me through the years about my “abilities” and “addictions” in all things home and garden. You’ve called me farmer, homesteader and a few of you even refer to me as “Martha”, I cherish each title and the people that gave them. Most of all I thank God, who’s blessed me not only with gifts of family, friends and gardens; but the honor of tending His creation and the ability to enjoy it.

Come along as I share my love of all things gardening always with a look ahead to the next planting season. It all started 14 years ago with heirloom seeds and grew from there! I’ll share updates and articles as well as favorite books, recipes and projects for garden and home. You’ll also get a good look at my day-today adventures of being a wife, mom to four kids and zookeeper to three pets. It gets a little crazy here sometimes, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
