  • Some Like it Harsh February 8, 2012
    Not every plant likes to have it cozy, crumbly and moist. Many plants around the world thrive living even in the harshest of growing conditions. Rocks, sand, little moisture and blowing winds are their idea of having a good time while loads of compost, high humidity and wet feet can bring them uncomfortable feelings or... • Bald Eagle Recovery February 7, 2012
    This past weekend I traveled to the Conowingo Dam at the Susquehanna River along the PA/MD border to see the Bald Eagles who spend the winter here. The Conowingo Dam is one of the largest non-federal hydroelectric facilities in the US, and when it is generating electricity fish and water are sucked into the dam... [Continue Reading] […]

  • You Win Some, You Lose Some… February 6, 2012
    I went to the garden t’other day, O readers, to have a good mope. I had a pretty good reason. The little cafe in town that has been there for years and years suddenly went out of business, completely without warning, ffft! gone. Now, I could come up with a lot of noble reasons why... • When Birds Recycle February 3, 2012
    I was out and about on Sunday, cleaning up after the dogs and looking for wildlife of interest. January is not always the best time of year to find things, but Florida has experienced a relatively warm winter and spring is in the air so we have our fair share of resident wildlife meandering around.... • Orange Moon and The Grandmother Tree February 1, 2012
    Exploring the wonders of nature with the children who come to visit my wildlife garden is one of the greatest joys of my life. We turn over rocks to look for the Worm Snake who lives there. We watch the bugs with our hand lenses. We are amazed when the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis.... [Continue Reading] […]

A New Season

Autumn to winter, winter into spring,

Spring into summer, summer into fall,

So rolls the changing year, and so we change;

Motion so swift, we know not that we move.

~Dinah Maria Mulock

We say it every summer, where did the time go?! The long and lazy days we looked so forward to have been filled and we’re looking to autumn as we prepare to once again pick up with school schedules and routines. This summer has passed faster than most with days filled not only with gardening, harvesting and preserving the garden bounty but also the building of a new business, The Soil Sisters.

Looking back, it’s been a fun whirlwind of fast-paced and creative activity! We have made wonderful new friends as well as sweet memories, but it is time for me to say goodbye. The needs of a young business are exhaustive at times as are the needs of a large family. This sumer made more difficult than others as our family dealt with the unforeseen legalities surrounding the death of my brother. As we now near summer’s end I realize this is where I am needed most as we look ahead to all of the adventures that await our family throughout a new school year and the celebrations we look forward to at the end… three graduations and a wedding!

I am thankful for every minute of the adventure I had with The Soil Sisters and I thank all of you that have embraced it. I’ll be cheering and watching as it grows… and enjoying a lot of family time as I do! As for me… I’ll be here as always (and contributing to  Beautiful Wildlife Garden) writing about what I love… the joy of growing! It’s the best of both worlds. Happy gardening!
