  • When Birds Recycle February 3, 2012
I was out and about on Sunday, cleaning up after the dogs and looking for wildlife of interest. January is not always the best time of year to find things, but Florida has experienced a relatively warm winter and spring is in the air so we have our fair share of resident wildlife meandering around.... • Orange Moon and The Grandmother Tree February 1, 2012
Exploring the wonders of nature with the children who come to visit my wildlife garden is one of the greatest joys of my life. We turn over rocks to look for the Worm Snake who lives there. We watch the bugs with our hand lenses. We are amazed when the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis.... [Continue Reading] […]

  • Green Healthy Lawns and Yards without Chemicals January 31, 2012
In cased you missed it, last week our very own Carole Brown took the wildlife gardening world by storm with her exposure of the National Wildlife Federation/ScottsMiracle-Gro partnership, which quickly escalated into a widespread social media storm of protest by organic gardeners, farmers and environmental writers. On Sunday, amazingly, the NWF’s reversed th […]

  • Counting Birds in the Garden January 30, 2012
I could not have guessed how timely this post would turn out to be.  I thought, I’ll get a head start promoting the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).  After all we want to see more birds in the garden.  But who would have guessed that while I was gazing out my window this past gray... • Feels Like the First Time January 29, 2012
[Guest post by Jan Bills] “For me the only things of interests are those linked to the heart” ~Audrey Hepburn When I read the email from Carole asking if I would like to write a guest post for her highly regarded, well-respected website, I nearly dropped my teeth! Me, I thought to myself. I am... [Continue Reading] […]

10 comments to Winter Interest Wednesday: indoors and out

  • Beautiful pictures! I really love the coneflower and grass seedheads, and the lupine reminds me, I still need to start mine! I’m planting our native Arroyo Lupine this year, and although I’ll direct seed some, thought I’d start a few indoors, just in case the ones outside don’t make it.

Thank you! It was a nice break from seed-sowing to get out in the snow and enjoy it! (I think I enjoy it more now knowing its time is growing short…LOL!)

  • Matti

Your camera really picks up the snow crystals, amazing. What is the spiky flower plant (first pic)? We lived in Wisconsin for many years, and your images remind me of the winter gardening itch we would get once February rolled around.

Thanks for taking the time to look! The first picture is of a coneflower (Echinacea) seedhead. The finches delight in eating every last seed though the fall and into early winter. Delightful to watch!

  • Brrrrr, it looks cold! I must stop complaining about our chilly, wet weather in California!

  • Oh, I recognize that little lupine seedling! Little cutie! Thanks for the winter pick me up!

  • Lisa

Today was actually warmer than it has been… we suffered lows of 0* just a few short days ago! (And I must remind myself there are those who live in even COLDER spots! LOL!) It was a lovely day to take the pup out for a romp and snap a few pictures. :-)

YAY for lupine babies in the middle of winter!!! :-)

  • Lovely photos, what is it about snow that makes photos look so magical.

  • Lisa

Doesn’t it, though? Like a lovely crystal shawl draping the world, it adds just the right amount of sparkle…
