  • Some Like it Harsh February 8, 2012
Not every plant likes to have it cozy, crumbly and moist. Many plants around the world thrive living even in the harshest of growing conditions. Rocks, sand, little moisture and blowing winds are their idea of having a good time while loads of compost, high humidity and wet feet can bring them uncomfortable feelings or... • Bald Eagle Recovery February 7, 2012
This past weekend I traveled to the Conowingo Dam at the Susquehanna River along the PA/MD border to see the Bald Eagles who spend the winter here. The Conowingo Dam is one of the largest non-federal hydroelectric facilities in the US, and when it is generating electricity fish and water are sucked into the dam... [Continue Reading] […]

  • You Win Some, You Lose Some… February 6, 2012
I went to the garden t’other day, O readers, to have a good mope. I had a pretty good reason. The little cafe in town that has been there for years and years suddenly went out of business, completely without warning, ffft! gone. Now, I could come up with a lot of noble reasons why... • When Birds Recycle February 3, 2012
I was out and about on Sunday, cleaning up after the dogs and looking for wildlife of interest. January is not always the best time of year to find things, but Florida has experienced a relatively warm winter and spring is in the air so we have our fair share of resident wildlife meandering around.... • Orange Moon and The Grandmother Tree February 1, 2012
Exploring the wonders of nature with the children who come to visit my wildlife garden is one of the greatest joys of my life. We turn over rocks to look for the Worm Snake who lives there. We watch the bugs with our hand lenses. We are amazed when the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis.... [Continue Reading] […]

Garden Bloggers GROW

[Garden Grow Bloggers poster.png]

I’ve joined the Gardenbloggers seed GROW project! Described as ” … a communal seed growing project … designed to get as many garden bloggers as possible to grow the same plant starting from seed” it’s overseen by veteran garden writers Mr.Brown Thumb and Colleen Vanderlinden of In the Garden Online.

Renee Shepherd of the well-known and beloved ReneesGarden.com is sponsoring the project. She’s generously supplying FREE seeds to participating home garden bloggers all across the United States. We’ll sow and grow the seeds out together and share with each other and our readers our experiences as we do. Here’s a first peek at the free seeds Renee’s supplying:

nasturtium-spitfire-f

Nasturtiums! A stunning, climbing variety, “Spitfire” inspires endless plant combination possibilities. Nasturtium blossoms are well-loved by hummingbirds and other pollinators. The leaves and blossoms are also edible. (Yes, I’ve have eaten them… many times!) Nasturtiums thrive in even harsh soils and are drought tolerant. “Spitfire” will be right at home in my cottage-style garden and I can’t wait to see how and where the other bloggers will use it!

Please take a few minutes to view the list of participating bloggers and their blogs @ gardenbloggers.com and be sure to check back here…

  • What fun! I have some of Renee’s nasturtium seeds here, though mine are ‘Copper Sunset’. I often buy her seeds, had no idea I could get some for free! I was living in Felton, CA some years ago when her store there was still ‘Shepherd’s Garden Seeds’. She’s always had interesting varieties of seed. Can’t wait to see how your climbing nasturtiums turn out. My ‘Copper Sunset’ is a mounding variety that I’m planting out along the edges of the vegetable garden. Fun thing is nasturtiums are tasty too!
