  • When Birds Recycle February 3, 2012
I was out and about on Sunday, cleaning up after the dogs and looking for wildlife of interest. January is not always the best time of year to find things, but Florida has experienced a relatively warm winter and spring is in the air so we have our fair share of resident wildlife meandering around.... • Orange Moon and The Grandmother Tree February 1, 2012
Exploring the wonders of nature with the children who come to visit my wildlife garden is one of the greatest joys of my life. We turn over rocks to look for the Worm Snake who lives there. We watch the bugs with our hand lenses. We are amazed when the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis.... [Continue Reading] […]

  • Green Healthy Lawns and Yards without Chemicals January 31, 2012
In cased you missed it, last week our very own Carole Brown took the wildlife gardening world by storm with her exposure of the National Wildlife Federation/ScottsMiracle-Gro partnership, which quickly escalated into a widespread social media storm of protest by organic gardeners, farmers and environmental writers. On Sunday, amazingly, the NWF’s reversed th […]

  • Counting Birds in the Garden January 30, 2012
I could not have guessed how timely this post would turn out to be.  I thought, I’ll get a head start promoting the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).  After all we want to see more birds in the garden.  But who would have guessed that while I was gazing out my window this past gray... • Feels Like the First Time January 29, 2012
[Guest post by Jan Bills] “For me the only things of interests are those linked to the heart” ~Audrey Hepburn When I read the email from Carole asking if I would like to write a guest post for her highly regarded, well-respected website, I nearly dropped my teeth! Me, I thought to myself. I am... [Continue Reading] […]

Follow the leaders...

You learn something every day if you pay attention.

-Ray LeBlond

A new year = new beginnings. Choosing to live a greener, more sustainable lifestyle isn’t so much a resolution as a necessity as we move into 2010. The environment demands it.  Good news! There are many talented and dedicated people willing to share their expereince to lead us in the right direction. Food safety, habitat restoration, wildlife protection, plant identification. Water conservation, carbon reduction, sustainability. These are the people to watch and learn from. It doesn’t hurt that they are also friendly, kind, funny and (in a few cases) completely irreverent. Follow, read, laugh, learn.

In addition, we’d like to share a bit of good news: the engagement of our eldest daughter to her boyfriend of six years. Yup…2010 promises to be a busy year of gardening and wedding planning. We are blessed.

  • Lisa, thank you so much for including me in this list. I am truly honored to be in such good company!

And congratulations on the upcoming wedding. Planning sounds like fun!

  • Wow, I’m tearing up at the idea of being mentioned in the same post as such a big announcement. Congratulations to your daughter, her fiance, and your whole family. You might just need your gardening to keep your sanity during all the wedding preparations!

Thanks so much for including me in such a great list :-)

  • Lisa, congratulations! Much happiness to you in 2010. How wonderful to have a photograph of the occasion…look at his face and her reaction. Priceless.

Thank you for the very very kind mention. As you may know I’m a vegetable virgin and this year resolve to be different. In the past frozen days your pictures of life in your indoor garden have meant a lot to me. I am being stirred into appreciation of growing food, after a flowers-only gardening history. Yes, 2010 is already very different.

Thank you all for your well-wishes! Thanks, too, for all you do and share. Your knowledge and commitment is encouraging to everyone that yearns to make the world a better place to live. Especially those of us who hope to raise grandchildren in it ;-) There’s always more to learn, appreciate and try. You are all inspiring! Lead on….
